Like Moe Tucker — the drummer in Reed’s groundbreaking band the Velvet Underground — Lou Reed has sold out his own ethos. Perhaps on a slightly lesser scale, but even more seismic on a pop cultural level. Is this the same Lou Reed that spit in the face of melodic harmony? That took up arms against the mainstream ideal of popular music and, in turn, beget a new era of contemporary music? Surely it could not be the same man that merely a year ago performed his most controversial body of work to critical acclaim and audience confusion. Surely this man would not direct this horrid, embarrassing cover of one of his best solo songs.
