State of the Confederation: Part 3

The success of Broken Social Scene, Feist and Arcade Fire may have killed Canadian music’s international rep as a pop-culture punch line (see: Dion, Celine) but any viable scene needs fresh blood. As such, an eclectic new generation of musicians have picked up the proverbial torch and marched across the borders that the early-2000s Can-indie explosion blew apart.

State of the Confederation: Part 1

It may be easily forgotten in our current Age of Feist, but the turn of the 21st century was not kind to Canada’s international musical reputation. The fledgling maple music industry had found its footing in the late ’80s and early ’90s with bands like Sloan, Tragically Hip and Blue Rodeo. But unlike Alanis, Sarah and Celine, these great Canadian indie/alternative hopes couldn’t quite make it across the border.
